Caring for dogs in later life
Our senior/light food is nutritionally balanced and made from high quality ingredients to ensure your senior dog maintains a happy and healthy life. The composition of proteins, oils and fats, and fibre also make Petsmill Premium Senior/Light ideal for overweight dogs (aged one to six years old) requiring a controlled diet.
Protein: Petsmill Premium Senior/Light has a lower protein content (21%) than our adult range for less active, elderly dogs or for overweight dogs. Protein contains “essential amino acids”, which must be provided in the diet as dogs cannot naturally produce these themselves. Proteins also play vital roles in hormones, enzymes and the immune system.
Fibre: ‘Our senior/light dog food has a fibre content of 4%. Fibre is not digested by the body, but is present in the food to aid digestion, as well as improve bowel health and firmness of stools. It can also be used to make dogs on a reduced calorie diet feel fuller after eating, despite consuming less nutrients.
Joint health: Petsmill Premium Senior/Light contains some added ingredients for joint health in elderly and overweight dogs, including glucosamine to help maintain joints and ease arthritis, an anti-inflammatory (methylsulfonylmethane) and chondroitin sulphate, which provides elasticity in joint cartilage.
Vitamins: Our senior/light food contains vitamin A for healthy vision, growth and immune system, and vitamin D3, which is vital for maintaining calcium and phosphorous levels in the body for bone health. It also contains vitamin E which is an antioxidant.
Minerals: Detailed on our packaging is the level of ‘crude ash’ found in our senior/light food. This ash is a measurement of the amount of minerals in the product. Petsmill Premium Senior/Light contains iron, zinc, manganese, copper and iodine – all of which have vital roles in the body, such as red blood cell formation, enzymes, hormones and tissues.
Fat/oil: The amount of oils and fats in Petsmill Premium Senior/Light is 8%. Both fats and oils provide the body with essential fatty acids, which the body cannot naturally produce, ensuring a healthy coat and skin. Similarly, they act as electron and substrate carriers, as well as making up the outer layer of cells.

Delicate teeth
Elderly pets whose teeth are not as strong as they used to be may experience difficulties when chewing larger sized kibbles. We therefore recommend adding a little water to soften the food for easy chewing.
